Secure product provenance, ensuring consumer confidence and reducing costly product recall risks are at the core of investments in food traceability technologies, which are expected to grow significantly in the food industry over the next decade.
Advances in technology are setting new conditions for the movement of food products through the supply chain, bringing the concept of producer responsibility to the forefront and creating a new context for the relationship with the consumer. New technologies that are transforming the production and distribution of products include smart labels, blockchain-enabled monitoring and tracking systems and embedded platforms, among others. Food traceability technologies are now, increasingly, important tools to ensure that food safety standards are met and to ensure consumer confidence in relation to food consumption.
